I love to go into a Broadway show 🎭 totally blind: Don't know the storyline; haven't read a single review. I want to experience the magic of the stage with zero expectations. @abeautifulnoisemusical was a fun surprise.

I had NO IDEA how prolific Neil Diamond was. Sure, I've fist pumped to Sweet Caroline, but there's so much more to this man than bum bum bum! 🎶

It was fun to see the show with my girlfriend @meganbrownnjrealtor who is a brilliant singer + also a one-time performer like me. She hailed Will Swenson as phenomenal in the role of "Then Neil" (nailed his voice!) and we both thought Mark Jacoby acted the hell out of "Now Neil." Linda Powell needs kudos as Neil's therapist. She was so alive on stage!

Good to know: It's definitely an older crowd. I was getting Showboat Atlantic City vibes circa 1999. I think my grandfather would've stepped away from the slot machines and the all-you-can-eat crab legs ONLY for Neil Diamond. It would be so fun to bus in a Jersey mom squad to turn the theater into a party. I wanted to be on my feet; out of my seat!

Have you seen any good shows lately? As part of my recent life edit, I realized I needed to add theater back into my world. Who knows? You might see me on stage again.

I bought this T-shirt 👕 for myself ironically. I had my first no-joke job at 18 and I was paying 💰 my own mortgage 🏡 by age 24. I’ve always been a self-sufficient hustler—as a senior editor ✍️ at @cosmopolitan I embodied our tagline, “Fun, fearless female!” Also, nowadays I often feel like I deserve a trophy 🏆 for juggling mom/wife/boss duties without imploding.

But I must say: I got some pretty mixed reactions when I rocked this impulse buy. People were puzzled. 🧩 A male neighbor carefully questioned: “Did Pat buy that for you?!” My husband asked sheepishly: “What would you have done if I bought that for you?!” My teen daughter (aka President of the Eyeroll Academy) let out an “Ewww. Why can’t you be a normal mom and shop at Talbots?!”

I will quote an @elitedaily article sparked by White Lotus that perfectly sums up my response:

“Perhaps 2023’s version of the trophy wife isn’t an actual title to embody but rather a state of mind. How was your Mother’s Day? Mine was good. YAY, nice weather! ☀️ The highlight was dinner 🍽️ with my mom and sister—no kids.

But I have a confession: I find what I call “expectation days”—things like birthdays, anniversaries, Mother’s Day, can be fraught with disappointment. Take yesterday for example. It was a lovely day filled with homemade cards, flowers…and lacrosse games. But on days like this, MY so-called day, every time the kids fight 🥊(how is tackle basketball 🏀 ever a good idea?!); don’t listen 👂 even when I repeat myself in my outside voice 10 freaking times; throw a wet 💦 pool towel on the hardware floor; leave the milk 🥛 on the counter; let the dog 🐶 in the house with muddy 🐾 …it hits differently. I somehow convince myself that if they truly loved and appreciated me and I really was #1 mom, they’d cut the crap. And so every “expectation day” I ultimately sneak away for a few minutes to have a quiet pity party. I’m as predictable as a Rom-com. I can’t be the only one. 🙋🏼‍♀️ 🤦🏼‍♀️

I learn a lot by teaching my kids. This weekend my two young sons 👦🏼 👦🏼 stuffed wads of crinkled bills 💵 in their Velcro wallets and walked by themselves(!) to the Westfield Spring Fling, cautiously delighting in their newfound independence.

They had earned their stash of cash 💰 selling bracelets with their buddies all summer and on this sunny ☀️ Sunday, they blew through those bucks at the street fair with happy abandon. First, greasy pizza slices 🍕 for all! Next, swirly ice cream 🍦 concoctions served in Mason Jars. One for them, one for every “bruh” on the lacrosse team. 🥍 The Murphy boys were treating! When their bellies were full, they gambled on prize wheels, hit up every vendor and even scored a present for our dog. 🐶

My boys arrived home hours later with big smiles, stuffed loot bags and a rush of stories. It was a YAY Day for sure! Then a panic-y reality set in: “Mom, we spent all of our money.”

I weighed my words. I certainly want my children to have some dollar sense, but in truth the real value here was that priceless afternoon, testing the boundaries of their freedom. We get one chance to do life; a few short years to be a kid. It’s never been more real for me that time ⏰ is truly the most important non-renewable resource we have. Once it’s spent, it’s gone, so we must spend our time (not always just our $) wisely.

I assured my boys that the pizza and ice cream were more than worth it. They could earn that money back—sell more bracelets—and with that they busted out the Rainbow Looms.

🍽️ I floated into #celiac heaven 😇 & stuffed my face with GF chicken 🍗 + waffles 🧇!!! Have you been to @friedmansnyc ?! 99% of the menu can be made gluten free. I’m headed back for GF fish & chips!

🛒Rediscovered a Thriller-esque vintage McQueen jacket in the back of my closet perfect for a date night on 🎭 Broadway with the hubs to see @mjthemusical 🎶 Elija Rhea Johnson crushed it with only one month on the job. As a onetime theater major who can’t sing or dance, I get goosebumps, tear up, fist pump, and generally feel electric watching others live their dreams.

🚖 Might have made out in an Uber on the way home.& now Cinco de Mayo!
